Promoting Fundamental British Values

At John Betts, we promote fundamental British values through our ethos, the curriculum and our Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship, Emotional provision. We recognise and promote the fundamental British values of:

• Democracy;
• The Rule of Law;
• Individual Liberty;
• Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

We intend for all pupils to develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

In PSHE the British Values are woven throughout the curriculum. Each lesson is specifically linked to a British Value and is highlighted during the lesson using 'Working Ethically Shield'.  At the start of each lesson, pupils are presented with a question linked to British Values, encouraging them to recognise these principles and explore how they connect to everyday life.

Therefore, these values embed our curriculum and are covered through a variety of experiences, including:

The Rule of Law

• workshops from the police and fire services
• reasonable consequences for behaviour

Individual Liberty

• health and well-being week
• a range of workshops e.g. financial awareness
• a wide range of extra-curricular activities
• fundraising activities
• sporting opportunities
• house system

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

• peer conferencing and feedback
• anti-bullying week
• celebrating topical events e.g. John Betts 150^th anniversary
• key stage and whole school assemblies
• multi-faith Religious Education lessons
• International day
• excursions to a variety of places of worship
• excursions to historically significant sites e.g. Windsor Castle
• learning a modern language (Italian)
