Buddy Reading

Buddy Reading is a much loved part of the John Betts timetable, bringing children together across year groups to foster a love of reading and develop meaningful connections. Buddy readers from Reception and Year 1 are paired with children from Years 5 and 6, while Years 2, 3 and 4 meet in their houses, creating opportunities for shared reading and interactions that encourage rich conversations around stories.

Older students take on the role of teacher and mentor, guiding discussions, asking thoughtful questions and encouraging younger students to be inquisitive about the books they are reading. Younger students benefit from the chance to be read to by an older child, building confidence, enjoyment, positive friendships and a sense of belonging within our school community.

Buddy reading not only strengthens reading skills, but nurtures a strong sense of belonging within our school. Students develop confidence as they read aloud, listen and share ideas, knowing they are supported in a safe and encouraging environment.

Buddy Reading is a perfect opportunity to see our school values in action! Students demonstrate perseverance as they work through new texts, kindness through encouragement and support, and integrity by being respectful and responsible reading partners. Resilience is built as students face reading challenges together, and courage is shown when they read aloud, ask questions and try new learning experiences.
