Design and Technology nurtures creativity, problem-solving and practical thinking. Our high-quality Design and Technology curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to design, make and evaluate purposeful products. Children are encouraged to explore how things work, take them apart, improve them and create solutions to real-life problems.
As pupils progress, they develop a growing confidence in using tools, materials and techniques safely and effectively. They learn to think critically, test ideas through prototyping, and reflect on their work to understand what has worked well and how it could be improved. Through Design and Technology, children discover how design shapes the world around us and plays a vital role in innovation, culture and everyday life.
Our aim is to inspire curiosity, creativity and a lifelong interest in designing and making.
Children have the opportunity to:
investigate and deconstruct existing products to understand how they are made
design purposeful products through drawing, planning and modelling
use a range of tools, equipment and techniques safely and confidently
create prototypes and finished products using different materials
evaluate their work and suggest improvements
A wide range of materials and resources are used, including:
construction materials such as card, wood, textiles and recycled materials
joining and finishing techniques including cutting, shaping, fixing and decorating
tools for measuring, marking and assembling accurately
materials that allow children to explore structure, function and aesthetics
Through hands-on learning and thoughtful evaluation, pupils develop the skills and confidence to become creative designers, problem solvers and independent thinkers.
