Maths Passports

Maths Passport Scheme

Maths passports form an important part of children's homework. The children work through the Maths Passport scheme in order to improve their quick recall of key number facts. Children have a copy of their passport that they take home each day to practise their current targets. They are then tested each week in school on some of these targets. When they have demonstrated quick recall of the facts on three separate occasions for each target, they move onto the next target. This resource ensures that our children develop a high level of number fluency.

Children having strong mental maths skills is essential for moving on to more complex maths concepts. This will help all children to understand numbers and number relationships, and see patterns in numbers.

How will my child be tested?

Children will have one Maths Passport that will be used at home and at school. You will be able to see when a child has passed a target as it will be highlighted green (keep practising these targets at home to support long-term learning).

Children will be tested frequently on 2-3 targets at a time. When all targets have been achieved three times, the teacher will carry out a mixed test verbally. The passport will then be 'signed off'. It is important to remember we are looking for instant recall.

When should children bring their passports into school?

Pupils should be bringing the passport home and back into school each day.

How should I practise with my child?

Daily for 10 minutes for the best results - this can be done on the way to school, in the car, out and about, at the supermarket, at home. Most activities can be done orally with your child, as children need to learn these targets mentally. They will remember them better if this has been done through talk and playing games. Maths Passports can be practised in any language that is spoken at home regularly.
